The restoration of gilded furniture is undertaken using traditional methods and materials. To match the original gilding, 23.75ct gold leaf is used for the water gilding and 23.5ct for oil gilding. Most frames have both types of gilding, except some giltwood and Georgian frames which are fully water gilded. The gold is aged to match any original gilding, aged to customers preference or left bright if asked for.

Below Are some before and after photos of some of the gilded furniture restoration I have undertaken.


A Thomas Johnson giltwood console table restoration. This console table was restored for the TV show Salvage Hunters The Restorers, Season 3 episode 2. A layer of brown gesso was removed, all old repairs removed, Missing decoration replaced, loose gesso secured, missing gesso replaced, Then a full re-gild and aged.


An Irish giltwood table restoration. Paint was removed, gesso repaired then a full re-gild.


An Adam style fire place. This piece was restored for the TV show Salvage Hunters The Restorers, Season 5 episode 16. Someone had tryed to strip the layers of paint off with a heat gun. This had melted most of the compo decoration. I removed the rest of the paint, replaced the missing and damaged compo decoration, gilded in tin leaf and painted the rest in a Wedgewood blue and a off white paint.


Gilded harp restoration. Removed the paint, repairs to the missing gesso and compo decoration, then a full re-gild.


A giltwood console table restoration. Lots of small gesso repairs all over the table, gilded the repairs and aged to match.


Gilded frame for a taxonomy display case. Wood was gessoed, then gilded and aged back.


A Victorian jardiniere restoration. removed the paint, lots of gesso repairs some compo decoration repairs, Then a full re-gild and aged.


A pair of metal candlesticks. Cleaned and gilded.


Desk re-gild. Removed the old worm gilding repairs to the gesso, re-gilded.


A giltwood chandelier restoration. Flaking gesso removed, lots of gesso replaced then a full re-gild and left bright at customers request.


A French giltwood clock base. Oxidised paint was removed, gesso repairs, then a full re-gild.


Side table gilded.


A pair of giltwood candle sticks restoration. These were restored for the TV show Salvage Hunters The Restorers, Season 4 episode 3. gesso repaired and mostly re-gilded and aged.


A German harp restoration. Removed the oxidised gold paint, repairs to the gesso losses, water gilded and burnished oil gilded the background.


A French giltwood chandelier. This had been very badly started by a "gilder" It was taken off him and given to me to rectify. lots of gesso repair and re-cutting. A full regild. Sorry I don't have a photo of the chandelier fitted back together.


A regency gilt round table. This table had a lot of compo decoration loss. Replaced all the missing decoration, gesso repairs, then gilded the repairs and aged the new gold to match.


A set of giltwood lions paw restoration. missing gesso replaced, repairs gilded and burnished to match.


A giltwood clock top decoration. Loose gesso removed, gesso repairs, gilded.


Wooden table base gilded in aluminium leaf.


Wooden stool gilded.


Fire screen restoration. Gilding cleaned, repairs to the gesso, repairs gilded and aged to match.
